WANA (Mar 11) – Iran’s Foreign Minister reaffirmed Tehran’s commitment to Iraq’s government in defending against what he described as unlawful U.S. actions.

Seyed Abbas Araghchi, Iran’s Foreign Minister, reacted to the U.S. decision not to extend Iraq’s sanctions waiver for electricity imports from Iran.

“It is extremely deplorable that the U.S. administration has decided to target the innocent people of Iraq by attempting to deprive them of access to basic services such as electricity, especially ahead of the coming hot months of the year,” Araghchi wrote on his social media account on X.

The Iranian Foreign Minister emphasized, “We stand with the Iraqi people and remain firm on our commitment to the Iraqi Government, which we will engage with to repel unlawful U.S. actions.”

The U.S. move comes as Iraqi officials say the country currently has no viable alternative to importing energy from Iran. Speaking to Reuters, Iraqi officials warned that peak summer demand could lead to a serious electricity shortage.
